I have always wanted to see this film since Roger Ebert gave it two thumbs up in 1981. I attempted to watch it recently and it initially hooked me but it became a one man show starring Andre Gregory with the occasional walk on prompt from Wallace Shawn. I was more intrigued when both men spoke than when Gregory philosophized on and on and on…The only moment I became engrossed in was a retelling of being buried alive. Not to mention whenever Shawn laughed it felt forced. If they made a sequel ” My Breakfast with Wallace” they should afford both men an equal amount of dialogue. I have lived this film with people in my life, when someone commander’s the conversation, I tend to look at them as a blowhard.
Awful just awful. I give it a 1/2 a *
Some people don’t know anything about conversation.

Now I am glad I haven’t watched this movie. Love Roger Ebert’s movie review. His writing is wonderful for good or for bad movies.

I think that’s about ten years ago and I haven’t read his movie critic website since then.

I feel like it was considered good because, at the time, it was sooo different.
In much the same way, I’m often disappointed by foreign films which gain massive popularity un the US (I’m lookin at you, Life Is Beautiful). I feel like they’re amazing to people who aren’t used to non-Hollywood films. Whereas I, who watches a lot of foreign and indie films, tend to be disappointed.

it definitely depends on the film..I try not to care about film review’s but this was 40 year long wait to be disappointed. Trust me I like different, that’s why I was drawn to it. But Andre Gregory ‘ s delivery is droll and Wallace Shawn’s reactions seem very forced.

I don’t recall Andre being known back then, so his monologues were new.

It took me a couple attempts to finish Dinner with Andre. I was intrigued but ultimately the meal did not satisfy me.
