The Life and Times of 50 Something Dana Myttis Hedrew (Rally My Brother)…

This will be the last Dana story for now. I am taking a break in writing these memoirs. To return some time in 2021.

Dear Diary: Dana Here. I am at a loss for words. My buddy, friend, pal Raphel has been locked up since April of 2018. I sit here reading a letter he sent me with a drawing a fellow inmate did of him. My friend didn’t steal anything or kill anyone he’s been in lock up for what appears to be a set up in regards to an ex boyfriend of the woman he was dating at the time of his arrest plus the Judge that sentenced him was taking bribes for lockups was under investigation and committed suicide shortly after Rally was sent up the river. Yeah, my friend is black and does have a previous police record, that’s two immediate strikes against him. But, God, he is such a creative, loving father of two. That has unfortunately, made poor choices in life. Rally has acted in films & plays of mine and even danced during a poetry slam. The photo in the middle of was in March of 2018 when he came over for dinner and cards against humanity, the last photo is from my 35th b-day when we sang some karaoke together.

From our first time meeting in driver’s ed way back in 1988, I had already had my licence and was taking the class for credit only. Every year since then you’d laugh and bring it up how I ran a red light and drove over all of the orange cones. The multiple times we hung out with Kroeger but found ourselves further connecting and sometimes leaving him in the dust.

My brother, my friend. Every day I hope and pray that you are released so we can resume an in person friendship.

Peace for now,

Dana
