In 1998 I discovered this crazy little museum in Massachusetts called the Museum of Bad Art. They were looking for submissions as long as the art truly sucked on it’s own merits. I decided to send two terrible paintings I did when I was at the Art Institute. Both were rejected for being too good. Essentially they could tell what I sent were art school exercises gone wrong. A few months later I was trying and failing miserable at drawing portraits of famous people. One of them was a cross between a Frog, Frankenstein’s Monster & Paul Stanley from Kiss, this was a legitimately bad attempt at drawing Joan Crawford. I decided to send them that. They liked the drawing so much they asked if they could add it to their 2000 wall calendar. It was a blessing and a curse I guess. I landed my first solo show in December of 1999 at Borders Books Cafe in Whitehall, Pa with a display of the calendar near my exhibit. I did sell both the calendar (and made no profit) and some original artwork and made some profit (definitely not a significant amount). As a struggling artist doing his best to not suck kind of hard to live that claim to fame down LOL. I made December & The Cover of the Calendar. Hangs on my dining room wall to this day.
