Something Old Sunday #6 (Unintentional Racist Skeleton in my closet)…

This is one drawing I’m embarrassed to admit to having drawn.  At the time I had a Mac Computer with a mouse to draw with as opposed to a pen. This was the best I could do with that mouse. I wanted to draw a flamboyantly colorful homosexual couple. Instead I inadvertently drew a minstrel show. This was a drawing done for an organization in 1996 called Artists for a Hate Free America. I even came up with the slogan: Brothers United into Absolute Equality. I’ll be honest at the time, I thought my design was rejected because I had to use a mouse to draw with as opposed to a pen not even realizing just how wrong this drawing was till years later. Sigh, sorry if this offends anyone. It offends this 49 year old bisexual German-Welsh-Polish-Syrian American. 😦

  1. Your heart was in the right place, so as a black man, I’m not offended. Lol At first sight it’s like hmm…. but only because I watch so much fantasy and sci-fi tv, I didn’t know what to make of it! Lol after reading your message behind it, it’s really cool. Cheers to equality! 🍻

      1. You’re very welcome! If it’s any consolation, the drawing is very colorful! Lol After all, we’re all one big rainbow! Your drawings are always great. Thank you for sharing, and sharing the story behind it!

  2. We live and learn hun, Things we in the UK used to find funny on telly in the 90s and before absolutely disgust us now (any form of inequality – sexism, homophobia, racism). I can’t understand how we found them funny in the first place, but as a society, we acknowledge and we learn. It is not my place to speak as a white woman, but if you had portrayed the obvious right of men over women, given the nature of your wording, I would not be offended, and would thank you for acknowledging and for changing.
