Forty-Five (The Great Allentown Fair)…

I found this challenge within Word Press called 45, which is essentially taking a walk and taking a photo every five minutes. Not exactly how I find the spark in my creativity but still something interesting to try at least one time. So thanks for the nudge Mr. Cafe The only editing done to any of these photos was minimal cropping.

My wife Jess and I went to the Great Allentown Fair in Allentown, Pa.

  1. Hi Matt,

I was really happy to hear from you and that you had ventured into Forty Five territory!

45 is an unusual approach and while it is not the way I normally approach my photography (As seen on my Postcard Cafe site https://postcardcafe.wordpress.com ) I find that heading out specifically to participate in the discipline of the 45 exercise can be very rewarding, because it strips away the parameters we normally take more control over; the subject, lighting, obstacles, environment along with other positive choices which are given over in a 45. The limit of time with which you have to take the photo also shifts the way we see things and perhaps taking a photograph becomes more intuitive or instinctive. I’m sure everyone experiences it differently but I usually feel rewarded and normally feel I’ve learned a few things or allowed myself to think differently and that feels like a good thing.

I was really pleased to drop in on your site to see the results of your 45. A nice set of images I think my favourite is the Bingo shot but Little Mike’s and Voltara are also great. I think the thing with 45 is that it is unlikely every shot will be a winner but as a whole the 9 shots can work as a set and sometimes reveal a narrative. I wonder if you would find the experience different taking a linear walk through the streets or open countryside? Those are the kind of walks where I feel more challenged.

Anyway it is great that you picked up the momentum from seeing the 45 site. How might you feel if I cut and paste this post onto the 45 site with credit to yourself and a link to your site. You’ll be our first participant from the USA 🙂 Please don’t feel obliged to agree but I like the idea that the 45 site represents a divers range of experiences and images.

Maybe we’ll see another 45 from you in the future…

    Thanks and best wishes
    Mr C 🙂

    1. I’d straight up appreciate the link and be proud to be your first across the ocean participant 🙂 I might try your idea again sometime but It actually took the whimsy out of my enjoyment of stumbling upon cool shots because of the time fixation. Only the sheep and the food truck statue are my favorite shots. But yeah connect me from your site.

      1. Great. I’ll drop you a line when I’ve put it up 🙂

I understand the frustration that 45 can bring and my better successes with it have been heading out specifically to do the exercise. The one shot only can be frustrating as can seeing shots but not taking them because of the 45 rules. Thats part of why I like it because from those negatives we can take positives too 🙂
        Best wishes
        Mr C
